1980-1981 Fox Body Mustangs. In 1980, Ford introduced a new version of its small-block V-8 engine. It was a 4.2-liter or 255 cubic inch variant of the 302 which had a smaller bore of 3.68 inches. Essentially, it was a scaled-down version of the 302. This engine was rated at 118 horsepower and 193 lb-ft of torque.
Ford's Muscle Parts showed how to improve a stock 302 to 355 hp. If a standard 302 could be built out to 355 hp just by using 351W heads, a 302 with what amounts to giant-valve 351C 4V heads has to be close to 390. Of course, this is all gross, and nobody uses that anymore. Amateur restorer.

The Boss 302 derives its name from the 302 cui V8 that’s sitting under its hood. This special high performance engine was the result of combining two Ford V8s. The block is a tunnel ported and reinforced Windsor block and the heads were pulled from the 351 cui Cleveland. The combination added up to a very rev happy and durable V8.
This Mustang features its original Boss 302, along with a four-speed close-ratio transmission and a 3.91 Traction-Lok rear end. The power output of 290hp may seem modest compared to other examples within the Mustang range, but it still allowed the car to romp through the ¼ mile in 15.6 seconds. Ford's engineers thought otherwise, and set out to prove it by building a thinly-disguised, limited production race car for the street. Starting with the suspension, the Boss 302 would gain new springs and bushings, sits nearly a half inch lower than a standard Mustang GT in the front, and offer 5-way adjustable shocks at all four corners.
